Today, the Where’s William Now road show landed in Toronto, Canada for the start of Leg #3. If one was to play the Powerball lottery and hit all five numbers plus the bonus, that would still fall short of the situation I found in the Great White North. Introducing the featured characters to my audience in advance has been the norm, and that is the main purpose of this post.
My good friends, Charles and Sera, are my hosts and to say I am in good hands is an understatement. This Canadian Super Couple have not only become my colleagues and good friends, they have become my mentors. We have gone on many golf trips together and every one of them has been an upper deck home run. But to visit them in their home country? That is a completely new level. Plugged in? To use a movie analogy, if the golf business is The Matrix, they are Neo and Trinity.
To start, we all work together at Pacesetter Technology. Charles and Sera cover their home country and much of the upper east coast of the United States. Second, they run an annual event called the Golf Social that brings together many of the top General Managers and golf executives from the top clubs around Canada. Third, they place top executives in positions around Canada through their golf recruitment company. Finally, Charles has a background in his own right as a top golf executive. So he walks the talk. Charles has forgotten more about the golf business than I will ever know, so if I need some advice he is my first call. And that call has happened more than once over the last couple years. Every single time, the guidance I’ve been given has proven to be on point. This afternoon, besides picking me up at the airport, Charles had “California Love” by Dr. Dre banging when I settled into the cab. He insisted it was a coincidence–but I know better.
As would be expected, these two superstars have my entire four day visit dialed in from sun-up to sundown. Tomorrow, we play the Pulpit Paintbrush Course. Then we head north to Rocky Crest and stay overnight. Day 3 we work back south to King Valley. And for my final day, I am joining the pro at The Toronto Golf Club while Charles and Sera walk with their daughter in a college match. Family always comes first!
A quick golf history lesson for my audience–the three oldest courses in North America are all in Canada:
#1 Royal Quebec
#2 Royal Montreal
#3 Toronto Golf Club, who turned down the “Royal” designation because “it wasn’t their style.”
I was shown to my room and the photos below are what was waiting for me. Yes, I have already carded a couple “Triple Bogeys” on this stop. I am a lucky man and I look forward to sharing my incredible days with Charles and Sera with all of you. At this point in the proceedings, I am prepared to apply for Canadian citizenship.
