After spending years playing golf professionally, you might think I would have gotten tired of chasing the perfect round.
The truth is, I don’t think that feeling ever goes away.
Golf has a funny way of making you believe that the next round could be the one. Maybe the swing finally clicks. Maybe the putts start falling. Maybe you hit every fairway and find every green. Or maybe, for one afternoon, everything just seems to come together.
Of course, it rarely works out that way.
And that’s exactly what keeps me coming back.
The First Tee Feeling
There’s something special about standing on the first tee before a round. No matter how many times you’ve played, there’s always a little uncertainty.
You can prepare all you want, but golf doesn’t care about your plans.
One day you might stripe your opening drive down the middle of the fairway. The next, you might send it into the trees before you’ve even had time to settle in.
That uncertainty is part of the fun.
Even after playing professionally, I still get that feeling when I arrive at a course I’ve never played before. I want to know what’s around the next corner, how the greens are going to roll, and whether the course is going to reward aggressive play or punish every mistake.
What Golf Has Taught Me
Professional golf taught me that you can’t control everything.
You can control your preparation. You can control your attitude. You can make the best decision you can with the information you have.
But once the ball leaves the clubface, it’s out of your hands.
That lesson has stayed with me long after my competitive days ended.
A bad shot doesn’t have to ruin a round. A bad hole doesn’t have to ruin a day. There is always another shot waiting.
That might be one of the biggest reasons I love this game.
The Adventure Continues
These days, I’m less interested in chasing tournament trophies and more interested in chasing experiences.
I want to play courses I’ve never seen. I want to revisit places that left an impression on me. I want to meet golfers with their own stories and discover what makes each course unique.
Some rounds will be great. Some will be disasters.
I’m sure there will be plenty of lost balls along the way.
But that’s golf.
And as long as there’s another course waiting somewhere, I’ll keep showing up with my clubs.
The perfect round might never come. But the search for it is what makes every round worth playing.
