Carolina in My Mind

Once my boys were dropped off at Charlotte Airport and safely on their way home, I headed towards Davidson to visit my good friend, Glenn. Glenn and I met in an elevator in 1996 at PGA School and have been close ever since. We might not connect for several months, but we are always able to pick things right back up where we left off. We are in touch with each other’s lives and children especially. We’ve also been on each other’s speed dial when life presents its inevitable speed bumps. I don’t like to answer the phone in general–but if Glenn calls–I’m picking up on the first ring. One of my favorite pictures is of me and Glenn’s kids from about a decade ago. Last night, Glenn’s young son Everett said I haven’t changed, which proves natural charisma can be passed down.

Davidson, North Carolina is a beautiful college town that reminds me of Wake Forest University, my Alma Mater. Davidson University is the centerpiece of the village, which has grown significantly since an undersized guard named Steph Curry carried the Wildcats to an Elite Eight appearance in 2008. In addition to the brick buildings and the mature trees, there is a vibe here that feels like a perfectly worn pair of jeans. You can’t walk a block around Davidson without a neighbor stopping for a chat. And, in one instance during this visit, Glenn and a friend stopped their cars at an intersection to say hello. I don’t see that too often at home in California–maybe there are just too many of us on the west coast to really SEE each other?

Glenn and I ran a few errands, one of which was taking his Tesla in for a windshield replacement. Glenn and I consider ourselves “service professionals” and I have to give a quick shout out to Roderick at Tesla North Lake. Although only 27 years old, this man came out from behind the counter and went above and beyond in every metric. Roderick is an obvious natural athlete, so Glenn and I encouraged him to learn golf as it’s a game for a lifetime. I gave him my favorite “skip the rock” thought on the swing with a quick demonstration. Glenn is going to give him a sleeve of balls and a flat rock to complete the circle when we pick up his vehicle.

Glenn and I will be watching the MLB playoffs today while I let my body recover from 25 rounds in 29 days. My next leg begins tomorrow when I hop a big bird to our northern neighbor, Canada. I will be visiting my good friends, Charles and Sera, for an Ontario-Muskoka-Toronto experience only they can deliver. Muskoka stretches from the Georgian Bay to Algonquin Park. Within almost 6500 square kilometers, it features approximately 1600 lakes, granite rock outcroppings, and thick forests. Besides its natural resources, Muskoka also contains championship golf and we will be spinning around The Pulpit Club, Rocky Crest, King Valley, and The Toronto GC in four consecutive days.

Now let’s discuss hydration. In a previous post, I have gone into great detail about my love (and misuse) of Transfusions. Evidently, the Canadians prefer a Cranfusion and I am looking forward to multiple taste tests to compare and contrast. So far on the Where’s William Now adventure, I have added England, Wales, Ireland, Belgium, and The Netherlands to my list of visited countries. Canada will be country #6 and will serve as my final stop of Leg #2. I am proud of the fact I have quadrupled my lifetime list of international travel locations. I should also say that these two drumsticks have not satisfied my hunger for more road trips.

What I have most enjoyed is sharing my travel experiences with all of you. I am grateful you’ve been with me on this journey. Stay tuned for more stories!

OK after over a month of reading your blog I have to say you’re a better writer than you are a golfer!!!

Can you just keep traveling so we can read your blog? Looking forward to it and don’t want it to necessarily end soon.

    Old Noseguard!
